The basilica of superga

Description

On the Colle di Superga in the 1706, the duke Vittorio Amedeo II of Savoy and his cousin Eugenio di Savoia - Soissons analyzed the deployment of the enemy troops in order to adopt the best strategy to free the city from the Franco-Spanish siege of Louis XIV.

Eager to win the battle and restore peace, the duke decided to dedicate a vow to the Virgin Mary, promising the construction of a sanctuary in her name in case of victory. After the defeat of the French, it was the exceptional Filippo Juvarra who designed the Basilica, whose precision made it possible to create a real jewel capable of offering a show that hardly disappoints the eye.

Inside it is possible to visit the Royal apartment, the residence used by the Savoy family as accommodation for stops on the Turin hills. An Italian garden with box hedges that give the illusion of being immersed in a labyrinth, characterize the area of Cloister. The monument continues with the Hall of the Popes, the art gallery made up of 265 paintings portraying the canonically elected Popes. Finally, through a marble staircase it is possible to reach the Royal Tombs, the mausoleum in the shape of an elongated Latin cross with the Sarcophagus of the Kings, containing the remains  of Carlo Alberto, VII King of Sardinia, while in the two lateral arms you can admire the Room of the Infants, which guards the bodies of the Savoy princes who died at an early age, and the Room of the Queens characterized by marble sculptures where the bodies of the Savoy Queens are found.

The Basilica of Superga is an eighteenth-century treasure from refined beauty which stands on the top of a hill from which it is possible to admire all the splendor of the city of Turin. Words are not enough to tell the wonder of this place!
